Polypteriformes is an order of bichirs and reedfish. These species are found in freshwater habitats in tropical Africa and the Nile River. Distinct from all other actinopterygian fishes, polypteriformes have an elongate body covered with thick scales. They also have a well-ossified internal skeleton, meaning they have a strong bond-skeleton structure.
Nile bichir's scientific name is polypterus bichir bichir. It is mainly a nocturnal fish and does not enjoy bright environments. |
